Dr. R. van den Boom

Dr. R. van den BoomRobin van den Boom is in 1996 afgestudeerd aan de Universiteit van Utrecht en vervolgens meteen begonnen met werk bij de afdeling Algemene Heelkunde en Heelkunde der Grote Huisdieren, later Departement Gezondheidszorg Paard.
In 2002 is hij door de Koninklijke Nederlandse Maatschappij voor Diergeneeskunde geregistreerd als specialist chirurgie van het Paard en in 2004 heeft hij met succes zijn proefschrift verdedigd, met als titel: ‘Synoviale vloeistof als spiegel van de (patho) fysiologie van het paardengewricht’.
Vanaf 2005 is Robin werkzaam bij de discipline Inwendige Ziekten en sinds 2009 is hij (door het behalen van het examen) Europees specialist (diplomate European College of Equine Internal Medicine). Tot zijn academische interesses behoren (o.a.) de dermatologie en de gastro-enterologie.

Dr. L. Young

Dr. L. YoungLesley Young graduated from the university of Liverpool in 1987. After a short spell at Glasgow, she attained her RCVS Diploma in Veterinary Anaesthesia in 1990 and worked as a lecturer in anaesthesia at Liverpool vet school until 1991 whereupon she moved north to gain a PhD in the effects of general anaesthesia on the equine heart.


Her interest in equine cardiovascular physiology then shifted slightly to the clinical cardiology of athletic horses and she ran a referral cardiology and sports medicine service at the Animal Health Trust in Newmarket, making significant contributions to applied clinical research in both equine cardiovascular function under general anaesthesia and sports horse cardiology during that period. She obtained her RCVS Diploma in Veterinary Cardiology in 2000, was awarded a European Diploma in Equine Internal Medicine in 2005 and RCVS recognised specialist status in Veterinary Cardiology in 2006. Since December 2005, she has provided an ambulatory equine cardiology referral service to general practitioners throughout the UK and Europe.

Dr. I. Wijnberg
Dr. I. WijnbergInge Wijnberg ( 28.10.1965, born Leeuwarden, NL) studied at the graduated in 1990 “with Merits” at the Faculty of Veterinary Medicine , Utrecht, NL Utrecht University.
Before this, she studied in the United States of America in 1988-1989 in order to achieve an additional Doctorate grade (Zoo Animal Medicine (Brookfield Zoo, Illinois), Medical Services (Anesthesiology, Intensive Care and Radiology), and Equine Medicine and Surgery (University of Missouri) and obtained an extra doctorate grade for Postdoctoral grade Veterinary Medicine.
After working in private mixed practice and for Prof. Dr. A.D.M.E. Osterhaus at the dept of Immunobiology RIVM, Bilthoven, NL in 1993, she started in 1995 a residency in Equine Internal Medicine at the Dept. of Large Animal Internal Medicine In 1996 a Preceptor ship of 10 weeks was followed in Equine Cardiology, echocardiography and general ultrasound at the University of Pennsylvania supervised by Prof Dr. Virginia Reef.
She registered in 2000 as Specialist KnMvD Equine Internal Medicine while staring a start PhD tract “Graduate School of Animal Health” that was was granted a PhD in May 2002 on the topic of The diagnostic possibilities on EMG needle examination in the horse. In 2001 she became Art. 9 officer (laboratory animal Officer). In 2004 she was registered as Diplomat European College of Equine Internal Medicine. In 2005 a BKO was obtained (basic qualification teaching) Faculty of Veterinary Medicine, Utrecht University.
Since 2003 she is working as Assistant Professor Equine Internal Medicine, permanent position at the University, Dept. of Equine Sciences, Utrecht University.
She published 49 scientific manuscripts and over 30 proceedings as first author. Areas of expertise and special interest are: cardiology, neuromuscular disorders/ clinical neurophysiology, neonatal intensive care.

Prof. Dr. R. DucatelleVeterinarian, graduated from Ghent University in Belgium in 1978. PhD in veterinary pathology from Ghent University in 1983.
Scientific advisor evaluating research projects for the Belgian government between 1984 and 1989.
Presently professor in veterinary pathology at Ghent University, Belgium, appointed in 1989.
Head of a research group with 15 PhD students, 3 post docs and 3 full professors.
Charter member of the European College of Veterinary Pathologists.
Past president of the European Society of Veterinary Pathology.


He is author or co-author of more than 750 scientific publications, of which more than 400 are listed in the web of science, more than 300 are in proceedings of international congresses, and 7 are chapters in books.


His research focus is mainly on intestinal health and on interactions of zoonotic agents with the animal host reservoir. Major research projects with external funding are on various aspects of intestinal health in poultry in relation to nutrition, including Clostridium
perfringens and dysbacteriosis, salmonellosis in poultry, and gastric ulcers in pigs.
These projects are funded by the Flemish government, the Belgian government, the European Commission, and various multinational companies.

Dr. H. van de Kolk

Dr. H. van de KolkHan van der Kolk started the course in Veterinary Medicine at the State University of Utrecht, the Netherlands in 1980. In 1986, in his final year, he took part in the Visiting Summer Student Program at the Veterinary Teaching Hospital, University of Guelph, Canada. On August 28, 1987 he graduated in Veterinary Medicine. His PhD thesis was successfully defended on November 14, 1991.
Since the 1st of December, 1987 he has been working as a member of the staff of the Faculty of Veterinary Medicine, Utrecht University with endocrinology and metabolism as particular area of research. He was additionally trained for three months in 1989 at the Animal Health Diagnostic Laboratory, Endocrine Section, Michigan State University, USA (under supervision of prof. dr. R.F. Nachreiner) in endocrinology and assay validation. He was qualified as diplomate in Equine Internal Medicine of the European College of Equine Internal Medicine on September 16, 2003. His ~100 peer-reviewed publications in scientific journals including Am J Vet Res, J Am Vet Med Assoc, Mol Gen Metab, Neuromuscular Dis, J Appl Physiol, and Am J Physiol - Reg Integr Comp Physiol have been cited ~350 times. He is Editor-in- Chief of the Veterinary Quarterly.


Han is married and has two daughters. Besides, he has special interest in ornithology and medieval architecture.
